Water Alarms

The Ontario Building Code requires that washer/dryer and hot water tank installations in condos be back-stopped by trays to catch any leaking water from accidents or burst pipes or hoses.

However, water could leak into the tray for a long time before you would know about it. This can be solved by installing a water alarm.

There is a large variety of these devices available in hardware stores including alarms that send out an e-mail if they detect a leak. Prices begin under $20 and wifi enabled is about $65.

Having a water alarm next to our washing machine makes good sense.  We have instances where unit owners have been liable for the insurance deductible, and also insurance claims can push up our condo fees.
